The official directory — and what to do in a true emergency.

US citizens in Mexico can get help — lost passports, arrest notification, emergency evacuations, and other citizen services — at the US Embassy in Mexico City and the network of consulates and consular agencies around the country. The State Department maintains the authoritative list with current addresses, phone numbers, and hours.
In a true emergency
For life-threatening emergencies in Mexico, call 911 first — Mexico uses 911 nationwide. Then contact the nearest US consulate for citizen services.

Before you need it
Take a photo of your passport and a copy of your itinerary; email both to yourself. Enroll in the State Department's STEP program to receive alerts and make it easier for the embassy to reach you in an emergency. And carry the right insurance — most consular services don't pay your hospital bill or air-ambulance flight.
