Temporary Travel Medical Insurance FAQs
Do I need travel medical insurance?
Traveling abroad without some kind of health coverage can be risky. Your health insurance from home does not cover you so if something happens to you or your loved ones, you will likely be paying high out-of-pocket medical expenses. Having a temporary medical plan in place when you travel allows you peace of mind that you will get the assistance you need in the event something unfortunate happens.
Travel medical insurance is ideal for people who vacation or visiting relatives in Mexico, people on cruises with ports in Mexico, business travelers and students studying abroad.
Is the insurance policy expensive?
For most plans, you can get a policy for less than $3 per day. There are several plans to choose from and you can customize to your individual or family needs. Factors that determine the cost of the plans are the age of the traveler, destination, duration of the trip, and the deductible and limits chosen.
Where can I seek medical help if I need it?
All plans give you the freedom to choose your own health care provider. You can also search IMG providers on their Find a Doctor page when you log into the member area.
Does the hospital send IMG a bill for services rendered?
No, most medical services abroad do not bill insurance companies like you typically see in the US. You will pay out-of-pocket for services and submit your bill to IMG. They will process the claim and reimburse you for your medical expenses.
Can I purchase insurance for someone else traveling?
Yes. The person being insured does not have to be the one filling out the application. As long as you have the required information, you can purchase a policy on someone else’s behalf.
Don’t some credit cards cover medical expenses if I am abroad?
Some do in some instances, but they are nowhere near as comprehensive as the travel insurance policies we offer.
How do I submit a claim?
You need to fill out a claim form from IMG’s member area and then you can mail or fax it to them.
